  1. Renowned Multi-Talented Personality: Onyeka Onwenu was a distinguished Nigerian singer/songwriter, actress, human rights and social activist, journalist, politician, and former X Factor series judge. She earned the nickname “Elegant Stallion” for her grace and elegance.

  2. Early Life and Background: Onwenu was born on January 31, 1952, in Arondizuogu, Ideato North, Imo State, Nigeria. She was the youngest daughter of Nigerian educationist and politician D. K. Onwenu, who passed away in a car accident when she was just four years old. Her mother, Hope, raised five children alone after being denied access to her late husband’s property.

  3. Educational Achievements: Onwenu held a BA in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and an MA in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research, New York. She worked as a tour guide for the United Nations before returning to Nigeria.

  4. Broadcasting Career: Onwenu made a significant impact in broadcasting, working as a newsreader and reporter for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). She gained international acclaim for her documentary “Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches,” which highlighted corruption and environmental issues in the Niger Delta.

  5. Musical Journey: Initially a secular artist, Onwenu transitioned to gospel music in the 1990s. She began her music career in 1981 with the album “For the Love of You” and went on to release several albums, including “Endless Life” and “In The Morning Light.” Her music often addressed social issues like health, women’s rights, and children’s welfare.

  6. Acting Career: Onwenu made her acting debut in the movie “Nightmare,” playing a childless woman who adopts a baby. Political Engagement: A member of the People’s Democratic Party, Onwenu ran unsuccessfully for Local Council Chairman in Imo State but served as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture. She was also appointed the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013.

  8. Activism: Onwenu was an outspoken activist. In 2000, she protested against the NTA for not paying royalties on her songs, leading to a hunger strike. Her actions garnered support from other artists and highlighted the issue of royalties in Nigeria.

  9. Personal Life: Onwenu was known for maintaining a private personal life. She was the mother of two children, Tijani Charles and Abraham. She often kept details about her family and personal relationships out of the public eye.

  10. Passing: Onyeka Onwenu reportedly passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72. She collapsed while performing at a birthday party in Lagos and was taken to Reddington Hospital, where she was confirmed dead. Her family has not yet officially announced her passing.
