At least 11 people have been confirmed dead following a fresh attack by suspected armed herdsmen on Anyiin, the hometown of Senator Emmanuel Udende, who represents Benue North-East in the National Assemby on Tuesday.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, who disclosed the incident during a high-level condolence visit led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu on Tuesday, described the attack as yet another coordinated assault on the people of Benue.
“As I speak to you today, another attack has occurred in Anyiin, the hometown of the senator representing Benue North-East,” Alia said.
“The death toll is still being counted, but at least 11 lives have been lost today alone.”
The governor noted that these violent incursions are not random but appear to be part of a systematic plan to destabilize and depopulate parts of the state.
“These attackers do not come with women, children, or the elderly. They come heavily armed with AK-47s,” he stated.
“Longtime residents and local herders, with whom we’ve coexisted for centuries, say they do not recognize these invaders.”
