No fewer than 14 people have been killed, while 10 others injured in a renewed attack by suspected bandits in some villages in Gummi local government Area of Zamfara State.
The police in Zamfara state confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Shehu.
Mr Shehu said that the latest attack looked like a reprisal following an earlier incident which occurred November where some vigilante groups around Bardoki village in the local government Area attacked and killed nine Fulani’s suspected to be bandits and set their houses ablaze.
He disclosed that the police upon receipt of the incident swung into action and arrested 11 members of the vigilante, popularly known as Yansakai, who participated in the killing of the Fulani’s, adding that investigation into the killing is ongoing.
“The Command swung into action and arrested 11 Members of Yansakai who actively participated in the actual killing of the Fulani’s that led to yesterday’s incident and are being investigated by the State CID Gusau. They will be charged to court for prosecution in order to serve as deterrence to others.
“However, combined teams attached to Operation Puff Adder, men of Operation Hadarin Daji and Vigilante led by the DPO Gummi, mobilised to the scene and embarked on extensive bush combing with a view to trailing and arresting the perpetrators.”
Mr Shehu disclosed that corpses and injured victims were conveyed to the hospital in Gummi for autopsy and treatment.
“The Command calls on members of the public to desist from taking laws into their hands, as it will not hesitate to deal decisively with any person or group of person that tries to sabotage the relative peace currently being enjoyed in the state,” he added.
