The Kaduna Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kabir Nadabo, has confirmed that a tragic lone accident along the Kano-Abuja expressway resulted in the loss of 16 lives, with four individuals sustaining injuries.
The incident occurred when a bus traveling from Kano to Markurdi in Benue state crashed at Taban Sani Junction, Tashar Yari, along the Zaria-Kano expressway. The cause of the accident is attributed to overspeeding, leading to the driver losing control of the vehicle and colliding with a ditch on Sunday at 11:20 am.
In a statement issued by the FRSC, it was explained, “An initial investigation of the crash revealed that 20 people were involved, 4 were injured, and sadly, 16 people lost their lives. The injured were conveyed to Makarfi General Hospital for immediate treatment while the deceased were deposited at ABU Teaching Hospital, Shika, in Zaria, along with the passenger manifest to help in identifying the lost ones as well as reaching out to their families respectively.”
Expressing sadness over the incident, the FRSC emphasized its commitment to its statutory duty of saving lives and properties, as well as creating awareness about the dangers of road safety vices and unethical road culture.
Kabir Nadabo urged stakeholders, especially transport unions, to collaborate in advocating for safety measures to their drivers. He also mentioned that the FRSC in Kaduna State, in partnership with transport unions, is actively engaging in sensitizing passengers about the importance of cautioning drivers on issues such as excess speeding, wrongful overtaking, and overloading.
