173,387 candidates to retake 2025 UTME as JAMB registrar breaks down in tears

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has admitted fault in the widespread failure recorded in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, became emotional during a press conference on Wednesday as he acknowledged the shortcomings that marred the examination process.

Fighting back tears, Prof. Oloyede announced that 173,387 candidates would be given the opportunity to retake the exam due to various technical and administrative lapses.

The decision comes after numerous complaints from candidates and parents over technical glitches, unusually low scores, and irregularities in the conduct of the UTME across several centres.

“I take full responsibility for the negligence of our staff,” Oloyede said, while frequently dabbing his eyes with a handkerchief.

He disclosed that candidates from 65 centres in Lagos and 92 centres under the Owerri Zone—covering the five South-East states—would be required to retake the exam.

The registrar’s emotional apology marks a rare admission of fault from the examination body, which has come under heavy criticism in recent weeks.
