A total of 119 inmates broke free from the Medium Security Custodial Centres in Suleja, Niger state, as a result of a severe downpour that wreaked havoc on the facility, according to a statement by Adamu Duza, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command.
Fortunately, immediate efforts led to the recapture of 10 escapees through the activation of recapturing mechanisms in collaboration with other security agencies.
“The Medium Security Custodial Centres in Suleja, Niger state, suffered significant damage during a heavy downpour lasting several hours last night. This unfortunate event destroyed parts of the custodial facility and its perimeter fence, resulting in the escape of 119 inmates,” the statement detailed.
Following the incident, swift action was taken to recapture the fleeing inmates, with 10 already back in custody. Adamu Duza emphasized the commitment of the authorities to pursue and recapture the remaining escapees diligently.
He attributed the vulnerability of the facility to its age, stating, “The heavy rainfall severely affected the custodial facility, which was constructed during the colonial era, leading to the escape of the inmates.”
Acknowledging the aging infrastructure, the statement outlined ongoing efforts to replace outdated facilities with modern ones, including the construction of six 3000-capacity ultra-modern custodial centers across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones and the renovation of existing structures.
In conclusion, the statement assured the public of efforts to address the situation and urged them to remain vigilant. Citizens were encouraged to report any suspicious activities or sightings of the escapees to the nearest security agency.
