2023: INEC REC seeks EFCC’s help to check vote buying, selling

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in charge of Borno State, Mohammed Magaji Ibrahim has called on the Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to intensify efforts towards curbing vote-buying and selling in the forth-coming general elections in the State.

Ibrahim made the call during a courtesy visit to the Zonal Commander, Shuaibu Umar in his office on Friday, November 18, 2022.

According to him, “the elections conducted in the past are going to be different from the 2023 general election because there is a brand new Electoral Act with new provisions that must be enforced.

He further stated that the challenges of ensuring a free and fair election in 2023 are not for the INEC alone but other critical stakeholders like the EFCC and other security agencies as well.

“An area of collaboration between the EFCC and INEC is the issue of vote-buying; operatives of the EFCC are professionals when it comes to detecting individuals who buy and sell votes during election periods,” he said.

Umar thanked the REC for the visit, stating that collaboration and synergy between the EFCC and INEC is not new.

He assured that “modalities are being put in place by the EFCC to check vote-buying and selling in Borno and Yobe states.
