After leading her nation’s team to their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup championship on Sunday, Spanish captain Olga Carmona has honored her father, Jose Verdasco, with a heartfelt tribute just hours later.
Carmona showcased her unwavering commitment by playing the entirety of La Roja’s FIFA Women’s World Cup final against England at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium. Her standout performance included a pivotal goal in the 29th minute, securing a triumphant 1-0 victory over England.
However, as the day drew to a close, the Spanish football federation (RFEF) conveyed somber news through X (formerly known as Twitter). In a translated statement from Spanish, it read:
“The @RFEF deeply mourns the passing of Olga Carmona’s father. The football player received the grievous news after the World Cup final. Our heartfelt condolences embrace Olga and her family during this profoundly painful moment. Olga, you hold a special place in the annals of Spanish football.”
Approximately three hours later, Carmona turned to social media to honor her late father. In her words, translated from Spanish:
“Little did I know, I had my guiding Star before the game even began. I feel the strength you’ve bestowed upon me to achieve this unparalleled feat. I’m aware you watched over me tonight, swelling with pride. Rest peacefully, Papa.”
