2027: I’ll hand over in 2031 if coalition agrees to one-term deal — Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says he is willing to serve only one term in office if that becomes part of the agreement reached within a proposed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi made the comment during a live Space session on X (formerly Twitter) titled #PeterObiOnParallelFacts, which drew over 10,000 participants and thousands of comments from the audience.

Responding to a question from a listener identified as Balactic, Obi said he would not hesitate to hand over power by May 28, 2031, should the coalition require him to serve a single term and then allow a power shift to the North.“If the agreement is one term, I will leave on May 28, 2031, not even May 29,” Obi declared.

He emphasized that his presidential ambition is not driven by desperation, but by a commitment to national progress and good governance.“I am not desperate to be president. I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” he said.

Obi also reiterated the importance of zoning and coalition agreements, describing them as vital elements of political maturity and stability.

His remarks come amid ongoing discussions among opposition figures about forming a broad alliance to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2027.
