Twenty-one members of the United Evangelical Church, Abayi International, in Aba, Abia State, were rushed to the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, after a fast-moving Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle crashed into their road parade.

The incident occurred on Thursday along Aba-Owerri road at approximately 6 pm, as the women and some members of the church’s Boys Brigade band were conducting a sensitization road walk in observance of International Women’s Day.

The accident abruptly ended the sensitization parade and placed 21 members of the church in peril.

Many of the victims, including a pregnant woman, sustained injuries such as broken legs, hands, and head injuries, while others suffered various forms of internal injuries.

The pastor in charge of the church, Nnamdi Kelvin, was visibly distraught inside the hospital as he spoke about the incident, describing it as reckless and terrible. He mentioned that the members were struck by the vehicle from behind.

Meanwhile, some of the injured individuals, speaking amidst deep pain, appealed to the Abia State government for financial assistance to help them receive the necessary medical treatment.

In addition to those taken to the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, four other victims were rushed to an undisclosed private hospital by their relatives.

The driver of the Jeep, who purportedly attributed the accident to brake failure, has been arrested and handed over to the World Bank Police Station in Abayi.
