22 Kano athletes, officials feared dead in fatal accident after Sports Festival
Several members of the Kano State delegation returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident.
According to reports, the vehicle conveying the team plunged off a bridge at Dakatsalle, located in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, late Friday night.
The bus was carrying 35 passengers, including athletes, journalists, medical staff, and administrators.
A survivor of the crash, Ado Salisu Gama, who spoke from his hospital bed at Kura General Hospital on Saturday morning, confirmed that 22 people died on the spot, including the driver. “As I speak with you, one other member just passed away,” he added in a somber tone.
The injured are currently receiving medical attention at the hospital, while authorities have begun identifying the deceased.
The Kano team had reportedly returned from the sports festival with 29 medals, but the celebration has now turned into mourning.
