As President Donald Trump escalates his efforts against illegal immigration, about 3,690 Nigerians are among the individuals facing deportation from the United States.
A document from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), obtained by The PUNCH on Tuesday, reveals the nationalities and numbers of individuals under ICE’s “non-detained docket” with final removal orders.
The report, as of November 24, 2024, shows that over 1.4 million non-citizens have been flagged for deportation.
The document titled “Noncitizens on the ICE Non-Detained Docket with Final Orders of Removal by Country of Citizenship” reveals that Mexico and El Salvador top the list with 252,044 and 203,822 deportees, respectively. Nigerians make up 3,690 of the flagged individuals.
ICE has intensified its deportation efforts as part of Trump’s renewed immigration policies, which have raised concerns among Nigerians and other African nationals residing in the US without legal status.
As part of his mass deportation initiative, hundreds of migrants were detained last Thursday, with many being deported via military aircraft.
On his inauguration day as the 47th President, Trump signed several executive orders aimed at tightening immigration laws. These included the end of birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented immigrants and the declaration of a national emergency at the southern border, which involved deploying additional troops and threatening to expel “criminal aliens.”
Trump’s deportation plans faced resistance from Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro, who initially blocked US military aircraft carrying deportees. However, in response, Trump threatened to impose tariffs and sanctions, including increasing tariffs to 50% within a week and imposing financial and visa restrictions.
By Sunday night, the dispute was resolved, with Colombia agreeing to accept deportation flights under “dignified conditions.” The White House confirmed the resolution, stating that the sanctions and tariffs would be “held in reserve” as long as Colombia complied.
