54 common traffic violations and penalties you should know in Nigeria

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a detailed Notice of Offense Sheet, under Section 10(4) and 28(2) of the FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007, and Regulation 220 of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR), 2012, outlining several major traffic violations and their penalties.
This official notice is part of the FRSC’s ongoing efforts to promote road safety and enforce traffic regulations across Nigeria. The document specifies a range of offenses that can lead to penalties for both commercial and private drivers.
Some offenses include:
Overloading: Transporting more goods or passengers than allowed, which compromises vehicle safety.
Hospitals Rejecting Accident Victims: A legal breach where hospitals refuse to admit victims of road accidents in violation of emergency treatment requirements.
Learner Driver Violations: Violating the legal regulations for learner drivers, including driving without supervision.
Preaching or Hawking in Commercial Vehicles: Engaging in preaching or selling items in commercial vehicles, which disrupts traffic and poses safety risks.
Traffic Light/Sign Violations: Ignoring traffic signals and road signs, leading to accidents and dangerous driving conditions.
Additionally, the notice highlights other serious violations, including:
Seatbelt Violations
Speed Limit Violations
Underage Driving
Unauthorized Use of Sirens
Using Mobile Phones While Driving
These offenses not only pose a significant risk to road safety but also contribute to the growing number of traffic-related accidents across the country.
The penalties for these offenses include fines, vehicle impoundment, or arrest, depending on the nature and severity of the violation.
The FRSC has emphasized the importance of strict adherence to traffic laws to reduce road accidents and ensure the safety of all road users in Nigeria.
