The Oyo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, has revealed that over 58 cows have been seized and numerous herders prosecuted in the past two years for breaching the state’s anti-open grazing law.

Speaking at an inter-ministerial press briefing held in Ibadan on Thursday, Olaleye reaffirmed that the anti-open grazing law, enacted in 2019 and signed by Governor Seyi Makinde, remains fully in effect.

“The anti-open grazing law is still in force, and anyone caught violating it will face the full weight of the law,” the commissioner stated.

He disclosed that law enforcement agencies have arrested more than 58 cows over the past two years, with several herdsmen already facing legal action for non-compliance with the legislation.

To bolster agricultural safety and rural security, Olaleye announced the construction of a security post at the Ijaye Farm Settlement. He also assured that Oyo State remains a secure destination for prospective commercial farmers.

“Oyo is the safest state for farming,” he said. “We have ample arable land, and we boast the highest number of Amotekun personnel safeguarding our communities.”

The commissioner’s remarks come amid heightened concerns over herder-farmer conflicts in parts of Nigeria, as states continue to enforce laws aimed at curbing open grazing and enhancing food security.
