Fifty-nine female aspirants in Benue State have signified interest in the chairman and councillor elections on the platform of the three major political parties in the state.
They are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and All Nigeria Peoples Party (PDP).
Investigation showed that of the number, 15 are vying for the chairman and 44 for councillor in the 23 local governments.
It further showed that for chairman, 12 of the aspirants are seeking nomination on the platform of the PDP. Three are in the ACN.
The PDP has 32 women aspiring to be councillors, ACN has 11 and ANPP, one.
Forty-four councillorship aspirants have picked forms to seek nomination of the 276 slots in the forthcoming council poll.
The women aspirants are alleging imposition of candidates on the electorate and the use of money to induce the people.
One of them, Mrs. Ann Makama, was apprehensive that the poll might be hijacked by money bags.
She lamented that money politics had affected women’s participation in the poll, adding that they were not supported by the government.
Some gender-based non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have promised to support the women aspirants.
