60-year-old woman allegedly beaten to coma by policeman in Delta

A policeman from the Enerhen Police Division in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State is accused of severely beating a 60-year-old woman, Monica Anyamah, into a state of unconsciousness.

The victim is currently receiving medical care at an undisclosed hospital, as reported by DAILY POST.

In a conversation with our correspondent, the victim’s daughter, known as Alexandria, disclosed that the incident occurred in Agbarho community on Saturday, October 21.

The policeman, identified simply as Bobby, detained the elderly woman at the Agbarho Division in Ughelli North Local Government Area. Tragically, the victim suffers from hypertension and diabetes, and she was allegedly denied access to her medication.

Alexandria also claimed that her father was beaten and injured by the same policeman.

According to her, the woman has been experiencing seizures since the incident on Saturday when the policeman struck her on the head.

In her plea for justice, Alexandria said, “I need justice for my mother, dear Nigerians, please.”

Recounting the incident, Alexandria explained that her mother, who is both a primary school teacher and a businesswoman, left home at 7:00 am to go to the Effurun market, where she sells secondhand clothing. However, when she returned home around 5:30 pm, she discovered that their house help, named Rejoice, had packed her belongings and left the house.

In their search for the missing girl, Alexandria’s parents contacted the agent, Wisdom, who had brought the house help, and they found Rejoice at Wisdom’s house. Allegedly, Bobby, the policeman, was also present.

Alexandria asserted that Bobby then attacked her father, injuring him, and beat her mother into a coma in front of her father.

Comrade A.P. Edariese, the Delta State Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, described the incident as “a case of brutalization.” He accused Bobby of brutalizing and detaining the victim with the alleged complicity of his colleagues at the Agbarho Police Division. Edariese expressed concern about the woman’s health and called on the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, and the Divisional Police Officer in Agbarho to intervene and investigate the matter to save the victim’s life.

Despite these allegations, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, simply responded with “False” in a text message to our correspondent. As of the time of reporting, the Delta State Commissioner of Police had not responded to a text message regarding the incident.
