A violent clash between the Tiv people of Benue State and the indigenous inhabitants of Yache community in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State has claimed the lives of at least seven individuals, primarily youths, with many others sustaining injuries. The conflict stemmed from longstanding disputes over land boundaries and farmlands.
During the altercation, which unfolded on Sunday, approximately 15 houses were set ablaze as tensions escalated between the youth from both sides. Reports indicate that 10 individuals, including women, from both communities suffered serious injuries, with many bearing machete wounds on their necks, heads, and legs.
Fearing further reprisals, numerous residents have fled their homes, despite the presence of security personnel in the area.
The boundary issue has been a source of violent clashes for years, often resulting in casualties on both sides. In this recent incident, a community leader from Yache, Augustine Odey Adula, explained that the conflict erupted when some of their youths approached Tiv settlers to inquire about their failure to pay customary royalties for occupying Yache lands. According to Adula, the situation escalated when a Tiv youth was apprehended and fatally beaten, triggering a retaliatory attack by the Tiv community.
Barrister Leonard Anyogo, Secretary of Yala and Cross River North Elders Forum, confirmed the tragic incident and revealed that the deputy governors of both states had previously convened in the affected community to appeal for peace while addressing the issue. Anyogo noted that the absence of a clearly defined boundary and the Tiv settlement on disputed land had exacerbated the situation.
The disputed land in question is historically a part of Yache territory, situated at the boundary between the former Southern and Northern Protectorates. Efforts have been made by the state government and security agencies to mediate the conflict.
The Cross River State Police Command is set to hold a security meeting in response to the incident, although they have not yet received an official report, according to State Police Command PRO Irene Ugbo.
