Leaders from various ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta have undertaken a solidarity visit to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), expressing the region’s gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his inclusion in the cabinet. They also congratulated Wike on his appointment as minister.

The 60-member delegation, comprising prominent Niger Delta leaders, was led by Prof A.W. Obianime, a former President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC).

Regarding the ongoing political developments in Rivers State, the leaders highlighted the strategic importance of the state to the South-South region. They emphasized that the state could not afford to be embroiled in political crises.

The statement read, “As Lagos State is very dear to the South West, so is Rivers State to the Niger Delta. This is because an injury to one is an injury to all, and we feel justified to condemn the ongoing developments there.”

The leaders expressed their disapproval of the attempts at the State House of Assembly to impeach the State Governor on what they described as frivolous grounds of ‘gross misconduct.’ They called on those involved to cease such actions and allow peace to prevail.

Given Nyesom Wike’s influential position in Rivers State politics, the leaders encouraged him to mediate and work towards a peaceful resolution. They emphasized the potential consequences of political unrest and called on Wike to take timely actions to prevent a devastating outcome.

The statement concluded by urging Wike to act as a peacemaker and work towards a peaceful resolution, emphasizing that silence in the matter would not be beneficial to anyone.
