Gunmen targeted Dungwel village in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State  on Sunday evening, resulting in the death of at least four individuals.

Shedrack Gambo, a relative of the victims, conveyed the grim news, stating that all the victims lost their lives in the attack, while some sustained varying degrees of injuries. Gambo expressed the community’s shock and grief, requesting prayers for those affected.

Captain Oya James, the spokesman for the Military Taskforce, confirmed the incident in Jos on Monday. According to James, the assailants seemed to have a specific target, with the village head as their primary objective. The troops, upon reaching the village, discovered that the attackers were inquiring about the village head’s residence.

James explained, “When the people saw what was happening, they started running away.” The bandits proceeded to set fire to the village head’s house, trapping his family members inside. Thanks to the timely intervention of the soldiers, the victims were rescued, including the wives and children who were locked inside the burning house.

He emphasized that without the soldiers’ intervention, the outcome could have been much worse, as the house was still engulfed in flames when the troops arrived. The troops had to break into the house to rescue the trapped individuals.
