President Bola Tinubu has called for a comprehensive review of all planned procurements across ministries, departments, and agencies, with a particular focus on significant projects under the Ministry of Works, to ensure more effective budget implementation.
This decision was part of the resolutions made during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday.
Additionally, the FEC recommended amendments to the legislation governing the National Council on Procurement to enhance its effectiveness.
Information Minister Mohammed Idris, briefing journalists after the FEC meeting, stated, “The President has directed that all projects requiring additional funding, especially major projects of the Ministry of Works, be reassessed. Further deliberations on these projects will occur at the next council meeting.”
He noted that many of the road projects were inherited from previous administrations and were not part of the newly approved projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Highway.
Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Lateef Fagbemi added, “The President emphasized the importance of a robust Procurement Act as a foundation for performance, particularly in infrastructural development, to prevent corruption and reduce the incidence of abandoned projects.”
