Baltasar Engonga: Fresh update emerges over leaked tapes of Equatorial Guinea official

The Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency, in Equatorial Guinea, Baltasar Engonga, has been arrested amid a major scandal involving over 400 recorded private tapes.

Engonga, a 54-year-old economist, reportedly filmed encounters with the wives of numerous high-profile figures, including his brother’s wife, his cousin, the sister of the country’s president, the wife of the Inspector General of Police, and spouses of around 20 ministers.

The tapes, found during a fraud investigation search of Engonga’s home and office, were stored on CDs that revealed explicit footage of his alleged consensual relationships with these women.

Ahora EG, a local media platform, first reported the scandal, sparking a wave of public outrage after the footage circulated online.

Attorney General Nzang Nguema addressed the media, noting that although the encounters appeared consensual, they raise significant ethical and public health concerns.

He urged that victims of coercion or assault feel safe to come forward, emphasizing the need for a supportive reporting environment.

The government has taken immediate action, announcing the suspension of officials found to have engaged in private activities within ministry offices.

Vice President Nguema Mangue reinforced the administration’s “zero tolerance” policy on public service ethics, underscoring that any breach of integrity threatens public trust. In a social media statement, he affirmed that respect and ethical conduct are foundational to Equatorial Guinea’s governance.
