Charly Boy reveals how stage 1 prostate cancer affected his health, libido

Maverick singer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has shared details of his battle with Stage 1 prostate cancer and his efforts to help other men fight the disease.

Speaking in a statement, Charly Boy revealed that the condition left him sterile and disinterested in sex. He disclosed undergoing surgery at Reddington Hospital in May last year after tests revealed his bladder and urinary system were affected.

“I was lucky to catch it early. The next day after the examination, I was admitted and had the surgery. Recovery was quick, but the emotional and physical impact lingered,” he said.

The singer recounted how his condition affected his self-esteem and outlook. “For a man, your penis is like your prized possession. When it’s not functioning, you feel less of a man. That’s why many men don’t talk about it—they carry it as their cross,” he explained.

This experience motivated him to establish the Charly Boy Foundation, an initiative focused on raising awareness and providing support for men dealing with prostate cancer. The foundation partners with hospitals in cities like Umuahia, Owerri, Enugu, and Abuja to subsidize tests and treatments for those unable to afford them.

According to Charly Boy, the cost of a prostate cancer test typically ranges from ₦50,000 to ₦100,000, but his foundation offsets a significant portion of the fees. For cases requiring surgery, the foundation raises funds to assist select patients with full procedures.

“My role is to create awareness and encourage men to prioritize their health. Early detection is crucial,” he emphasized, adding that openness and support are vital in overcoming such challenges.

Charly Boy also called on Nigerians to support his initiative, noting the limited attention given to men’s health in comparison to women’s and children’s issues.

“For families that have gone through what I have, they will understand the need for support. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference,” he urged.

The singer continues to champion prostate cancer awareness, urging men to seek regular medical checkups and break the stigma surrounding discussions about their health.
