The Edo State Police Command has arrested seven suspected members of a cult group in Benin City.

The suspects were apprehended on Sunday, June 8, by operatives of the Love World Division while allegedly assaulting a commercial motorcyclist at Peanut Junction along the Benin-Sapele Road.

Spokesman of the Command, SP Moses Yamu, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He gave the names of the suspects as Erick Charles, Gift Nerese, Odion Osaro, Festus Osaghai, Owas Ighodaro, Samuel Sabi, and Destiny Bernard, adding that two other suspects managed to escape from the scene.

According to Yamu, two of those arrested confessed to being members of the Maphite Confraternity.

Items recovered from the suspects include a pestle, a machete, one live cartridge, and a tricycle with registration number AUC 184 VH.

He said the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

Yamu further disclosed that the Command’s ongoing house-to-house operation to apprehend known cultists across the state will be sustained until the menace is reduced to the barest minimum.
