The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has placed the entire sub-region under a state of emergency following a surge in security challenges.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in Abuja by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, during the 55th Ministerial Meeting of the Mediation and Security Council.

The emergency session was called amid growing concerns over repeated military takeovers and attempted coups across several member states.

Addressing delegates, Touray said the unfolding situation demands “the imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community.”
