Gov Alia submits N605bn 2026 Budget to Benue Assembly
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, on Monday laid the 2026 Appropriation Bill before the State House of Assembly, outlining a total spending plan of ₦605.5 billion for the coming fiscal year.
The proposed budget marks about a 10 per cent rise compared to the 2025 financial plan.
While presenting the estimates, the governor explained that the budget theme aligns with his administration’s development agenda, prioritising rural transformation as a driver of inclusive economic growth and long-term stability.
He observed that rural communities in Benue—central to agricultural production and the preservation of cultural values—have endured prolonged neglect due to insufficient investment. According to him, the 2026 proposal is structured to correct this imbalance.
Details of the appropriation showed that ₦281.09 billion was allocated to recurrent expenditure, representing 46.4 per cent of the overall budget.
This recurrent provision reflects a 21.69 per cent increase over the adjusted 2025 figure and is intended to meet obligations such as minimum wage payments, personnel costs, and other administrative and operational expenses.
For capital spending, the governor proposed ₦342.42 billion to finance projects designed to consolidate economic progress and boost development in rural areas.
The capital vote indicates a 1.66 per cent variation from the revised 2024 capital budget, with priority given to infrastructure development, livelihood enhancement, and sustainable growth programmes.
Governor Alia described the budget presentation as a reflection of responsibility and hope, reiterating his government’s resolve to meet the expectations and needs of the people of Benue.
In his response, Speaker of the House, Alfred Emberga, expressed appreciation to the governor for submitting what he referred to as the administration’s third budget in compliance with constitutional requirements.
He noted that the estimates underscored the governor’s vision and dedication to improving the living standards of residents and assured that the legislature would give the proposal swift attention.
The speaker further pledged that the assembly would expedite the review process and called on ministries, departments and agencies to fully cooperate with legislative committees during budget defence to facilitate the passage of a practical, transparent and people-focused 2026 budget.
