Imo LG elections: APGA asks High Court to stop september 26 Poll

The All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA has approached the Imo State High Court in Owerri, seeking an order to halt the local government elections scheduled for September 26, 2026.

The party and four members of its state executive filed Suit No. HOW/1380/2026 on September 16 against the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission ISIEC and its chairman.

They are asking the court to stop the commission from conducting the elections until the substantive case is determined.

APGA argued that the 360-day Notice of Election issued by ISIEC on September 18, 2025, failed to state the date fixed for the poll. According to the plaintiffs, the omission made the notice defective under the applicable electoral law.

The party also challenged ISIEC’s decision to announce September 26 as the election date on September 11, 2026. It maintained that the later announcement came too late to correct the alleged defect in the earlier notice.

The plaintiffs relied on a 2025 Supreme Court ruling concerning local government elections in Rivers State. They argued that electoral bodies must strictly comply with statutory provisions, including requirements relating to the Notice of Election and Register of Voters.

APGA further argued that the Electoral Act 2022, which governed the 2025 notice, had been repealed following the commencement of the Electoral Act 2026 in February.

The plaintiffs also raised questions over ISIEC’s compliance with provisions governing the Register of Voters, particularly the requirement for registration and revision to stop 90 days before the election.
