MTN to pay Benue govt. N829,105,000 as BIRS wins law suit

MTN Nigeria are to pay the sum of N829,105,00.00 After losing in a law suit instituted against it by the Benue Internal Revenue Service (BIRS)as payment for default tax payment.

The matter BENUE STATE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE VS. MTN NIGERIA COMMUNICATION LTD. SUIT NO. MHC/39/2018 Presided by Hon. Justice M. A. Ikpambese today, awarded the total sum in favour of BIRS.

The court awarded in favour of the Plaintiff (BIRS) as follows:

1. N556,500,000 being the assessment of tax accrued to the Benue State.
2. The sum of N55,650,000 being 10 percent as default of payment of the principal sum of #556, 500,000 as at when due
3. The sum of N116, 850,000 being 21 percent interest for default of payment of the principal sum.
4. N100,000,000 being a cost of the suit.

Meanwhile the Executive Chairman BIRS, Mr. Andrew Ayabam has reiterated that his administration will continue to push for responsible taxation while enjoining all tax payers to adopt voluntary taxation.

He further advised that intending tax payers should take advantage of the Board’s E-Tax Services to conduct their tax assessment by logging on to http://www.birs.gov.ng
