Tor Tiv reveals plan to change obnoxious customs in parts of Benue community

The 16 days of activism against Gender based Violence (GBV) to mark the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women began Wednesday 25th, 2020 in Makurdi with Traditional Rulers in attendance.

The event which was held at the Banquet Hall of Benue People’s House Makurdi.

After deliberations between traditional leaders and organisations such as FIDA, NAPTIP, ESLF, MWAN and other partners,

the Paramount Ruler of the Tiv Nation Prof. James Ayatse announced the resolutions on behalf of the Council of Traditional Rulers in the state.i

The Tor Tiv accepted that Customary Customs that not conform with current trends to capture emerging issues of GBV would be looked into.

He stated that issues pertaining GBV should be summarised and sent to the council for deliberation to come up with concrete resolutions to end the scourge.

Earlier in her speech, the First Lady of Benue State, Dr Eunice Ortom explained that the presence of the Traditional Rulers was a strong demonstration of their will to end SGBV.

Mrs Ortom expressed optimism that after 16 days of activism, obnoxious customs and traditions that aid GBV would become a thing of a past.

She noted that violence against women leave physical, psychological and emotional scars on victims and urged people to break the culture of silence by always speaking out.

The wife of the Governor urged traditional leaders to discuss and come up with a robust plan to tackle the menace once and for all.
