Aba bye-election: Ebisike of PDP floors Uzor Kalu’s brother, Mascot

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has strengthened its dominance of Abia State by winning the Aba North and South Federal Constituency bye-election of Saturday.

Announcing the result of the election around 2am on Sunday, the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Returning Officer for the exercise, Professor Fidelis Okpata of the Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, said Chimaobi Ebisike polled 10,322 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mascot Uzor Kalu, who scored 3,674 votes.

Mascot is the younger brother of Orji Uzor Kalu, the lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District.

Candidates of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Destiny Nwagwu, and the Action Alliance (AA) candidate, Okey Prestige, polled 1,554 and 199 votes respectively to come a distant 3rd and 4th, while the candidates of the APM and NRM scored 10 and 13 votes respectively.

About 498,390 voters were expected to cast their ballots in 609 polling units spread across 24 Registration Areas (RAs) in the two Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the constituency but there was a low turnout as the total number of votes cast was less than 20,000.

There was violence in some areas but the election was largely peaceful.

Ossy Prestige of APGA was the representative of the constituency but he died on February 6.
