Abba Moro praises Wike’s leadership, says PDP will never die
The Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has praised the leadership of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, insisting that the Peoples Democratic Party will survive its prolonged internal crisis and bounce back stronger.
Moro, who represents Benue South Senatorial District, made the remarks on Sunday while addressing delegates at the party’s national convention in Abuja. He commended Wike for what he described as pragmatic leadership that has kept the PDP afloat despite internal divisions.
According to him, the PDP caucus in the National Assembly played a mediating role in the crisis to restore peace and stability, but their efforts were misinterpreted by some party members. He noted that lawmakers had warned against the Ibadan convention, which he said was held against subsisting court orders, adding that the move further polarized the party.
The senator disclosed that during the mediation process, the caucus met with Wike and presented conditions for peace, including the establishment of a caretaker committee pending a national convention to elect a new National Working Committee. He said Wike accepted the proposals.
“In this defining moment and, as the Americans would say, in the fierce urgency of the moment, the PDP caucus in the National Assembly has resolved not to sit on the fence any longer. We resolved to identify with the legally recognised PDP, and that is why we are here for this convention. We will work with the leaders of the party to rebuild it and prepare for the 2027 general elections,” Moro said.
He described the PDP as a party cherished by Nigerians and pledged that members would work collectively to keep it strong and competitive. Moro also hailed Wike’s “doggedness,” noting that some critics of the minister had since defected to the All Progressives Congress.
“Those who criticised Governor Wike for professing to work for the re-election of President Tinubu have since defected to the same APC. Are they there to work against President Tinubu?” he asked.
Moro expressed optimism that the PDP would rebound following the emergence of a new National Working Committee, assuring continued support from the National Assembly caucus. He thanked delegates and party leaders for ensuring the success of the convention and predicted the party’s return to winning ways.
