Mr. Gregory Maduakolam, an Assistant Editor-in-Chief at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Owerri Office, who was abducted on Thursday, has been released.
Maduakolam confirmed his release in phone calls to some colleagues around 11:51 pm on Saturday, revealing that his family had paid an undisclosed ransom to secure his freedom.
During his time in captivity, Maduakolam was reportedly mistreated by his abductors. He shared the details of the abduction, explaining that he was ambushed while in Irete, near Owerri, where he had gone to inspect a house with a friend and a house agent.
“After inspecting the house, I agreed on the part payment and other fees with the agent. As I was about to leave on a commercial motorcycle, five young men appeared from the neighborhood and abducted me,” he said.
Maduakolam further disclosed that his kidnappers seized his phone and used it to withdraw money from his bank account.
He expressed his gratitude to God and thanked those who expressed concern during the ordeal, including the management and staff of NAN.
