Abia Poly management under fire for failing to hold convocation in 10 years
The President, Students Union Government of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, Comrade George Nwankwo, has disclosed that the institution has not conducted convocation for the past ten years.
Nwankwo revealed this while interacting with the Adhoc Committee set up by the leadership of the current 7th Abia House of Assembly to investigate nonpayment of salaries to the Polytechnic workers.
The committee is headed by Hon. Jerry Uzosike, the member representing Umuahia South State Constituency.
The SUG President appealed to the government to come to the aid of the Polytechnic management, as the infrastructural decays littering in the school was slowing down academics.
Responding before the Committee, the Rector of the Abia State Polytechnic, Professor Ezionye Eboh, told the committee that the institution’s management had concluded arrangement to hold convocation for her graduated students before October 2019.
Eboh also reiterated that he was doing his possible best to see that both Academic Staff and Non-Academic Staff received their backlogs of salaries.
Hon. Jerry Uzosike, the Chairman of the committee, charged the Rector of Abia Polytechnic, to as a matter of urgency to catalyze an everlasting solution to settle the challenges facing the institution.
“We are dissatisfied with what we are seeing, particularly the decay in the school’s infrastructures and non payment of the Polytechnic workers.
“So, as a matter of urgency, we are urging the Rector and the School Management to map out measures to see salaries, gratuities owed to the workers are paid. We are not here to witch-hunt anybody.
“We need the cooperation of the management in order to address this challenges raving the institution”.
