Abuja’s crackdown: Again, FCTA crushes 470 motorcycles for illegal operation

On Thursday, the Joint Task Force of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) destroyed over 470 motorcycles that were seized for operating illegally in Abuja, the capital city.

These motorcycles had been confiscated by the task force during an operation that started at Carwash Bus Stop, Lugbe, and covered Gosa, Bill Clinton Drive, Trademore Estate, Lugbe Junction, and Kubwa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that a similar operation on August 31 led to the impounding and crushing of over 400 motorcycles for the same offense.

Mr. Obokutom Nyah, the Secretary of the Transportation Secretariat, FCTA, informed journalists during the operation that this action was in compliance with the law.

Nyah cautioned commercial motorcyclists to confine their operations to designated areas, avoiding the city center to prevent posing a security risk.

He clarified that specific areas are allocated for various types of vehicles, emphasizing that commercial motorcycles are only permitted to operate in the suburbs.

“We urge the operators to respect these boundaries, as crossing the line will result in legal consequences,” Nyah stated.

Additionally, Mr. Abdulateef Bello, the Director of FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services, expressed concern about the excessive number of motorcycles operating within the city.

Bello mentioned that the task force would extend its operations to nighttime, revealing that they currently impound between 200 and 400 motorcycles weekly.

He indicated that the task force is considering taking action against residents who use motorcycles, aiming to enhance enforcement.

Bello encouraged residents to refrain from using motorcycles and instead opt to walk short distances when possible for their safety.

Furthermore, he advised potential investors in the commercial motorcycle business to reconsider, underscoring that the FCTA would allocate resources to regulate them. (NAN)
