The Nigeria Police have apprehended Mrs. Adachukwu Okafor, a lawyer, who stands accused of abusing her 10-year-old house help.
According to a statement from the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Women Affairs, Ohaeri Joseph, the lawyer had been evading authorities since news of her alleged crime surfaced online.
Weapons reportedly used to inflict harm on the child include a broken bottle, a knife, and an electric pressing iron.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Uju Ohanenye, had previously offered a N2 million reward for any information leading to the apprehension of the lawyer, who disappeared after a video depicting her misdeeds went viral.
“Days after the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Uju Ohanenye, offered a N2 million bounty for information on Onitsha-based lawyer Mrs. Adachukwu Okafor, in relation to child abuse, she has been taken into custody,” said Ohaeri.
The incident, which garnered widespread attention on social media platforms, allegedly resulted in severe injuries to the minor.
“The suspect had been on the run for weeks following reports of her inflicting severe injuries on the minor, prompting the minister to offer a reward for information on her whereabouts,” he added.
Ohaeri further stated that the ministry will collaborate with the police to launch an immediate investigation into the matter.
“While the girl is still undergoing medical treatment in the hospital, we assure the public that she will receive justice,” the statement concluded.
