AFCON 2023: Six Guinea fans die while celebrating victory

Six Guinean football supporters lost their lives while celebrating Guinea’s first victory at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The incident occurred during celebratory events on the streets of Conakry, Guinea’s capital, where fans were driving cars and riding motorcycles.

Guinea secured a 1-0 win over The Gambia in their second group game on Friday night, prompting widespread celebrations in the West African nation. The Guinean Football Federation, Feguifoot, confirmed the tragic incident and urged fans to celebrate in a measured manner to avoid putting themselves in danger.

Feguifoot media manager Amadou Makadji emphasized the passion for football in Guinea and urged fans to celebrate responsibly to prevent any further tragedies. Guinea currently holds the second position in Group C with four points, following a goal by Aguibou Camara.

Pascal Feindouno, a former star player for Guinea, expressed his condolences and called on fans to remain calm. He emphasized that the team is in Ivory Coast to defend the country’s colors and urged supporters not to engage in actions that could harm each other.

The Africa Cup of Nations, which began on January 13, 2024, is scheduled to conclude with the final in Abidjan on February 11.
