AFCON: Austin Eguavoen is the best coach suited for Super Eagles – Oliseh

Former Super Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh has lambasted the Nigerian football authorities over the appointment of a foreigner as the national team coach.

The former Ajax midfielder said he could not wrap his head around why the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also sees foreign coaches as superior to homegrown coaches.

The NFF recently announced that Jose Peseiro will take over as the Super Eagles boss immediately after the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. He will take over from interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, who is currently leading the team to Cameroon.

Nigeria will begin their campaign for a fourth African title against Egypt on Tuesday in Garoua and also have to play Guinea-Bissau and Sudan in Group D.

And Oliseh said he believes that Eguavoen would do well at that tournament to the level that NFF would see Peseiro’s contract terminated and retain the former Super Eagles’ captain for the position.

“Why the fanatical craze to always want to employ a foreign coach for the Super Eagles, that is the thing I still can’t get my head around,” Oliseh told Complete Sports.

“Is it telling all Nigerian coaches and Nigerian people they are not capable of coaching the Super Eagles?

“I am even tempted to call it loss of ideas to always want to take a foreign coach. We always take coaches nobody knows before they come to Nigeria.

“I’m looking forward to Austin Eguavoen performance, I’m very optimistic, I’m in total support of his being there. In fact, I hope he can do well and can continue with the job after the tournament no matter what has been said before.”
