AFCON: Oliseh hails Bassey as Nigeria’s standout performer
Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, has singled out Calvin Bassey as the Nigerian player who has impressed him the most at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Oliseh made the remarks while speaking on the Global Football Insights podcast, where he praised the Fulham defender for his growth and composure at the heart of Nigeria’s defence.
“The player nobody is talking about that is impressing me most is Calvin Bassey,” Oliseh said.
“My God, this boy has totally grown in confidence. He’s a rock. If you throw anything at him, he will handle it well. He is well complemented by Ajayi at the back.”
Bassey is expected to play a key role when the Super Eagles take on hosts Morocco in the AFCON semi-final on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old has been one of the standout performers for Eric Chelle’s side in the tournament, forming a solid and dependable partnership with Semi Ajayi in central defence as Nigeria push for a place in the final.
