AFCON: Struggling Ivory Coast sack head coach, Jean-Louis Gasset

Jean-Louis Gasset, the coach of the Ivory Coast national football team, has been relieved of his duties as the head coach for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosts.

This was announced by the country’s football federation in a statement on Wednesday, citing “insufficient results” as the reason for terminating Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant’s contracts.

The dismissal comes just two days after Ivory Coast’s 4-0 defeat against Equatorial Guinea, marking the heaviest home defeat in the history of the Elephants.

This defeat leaves Ivory Coast as the first AFCON host to lose two group games since 1984. Despite the challenging start, Ivory Coast still holds slim hopes of advancing to the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.

Emerse Fae, one of Gasset’s coaches, will take charge on an interim basis as Ivory Coast seeks to regroup and navigate their way through the remainder of the tournament.
