AFCON: Why Victor Osimhen may not play against South Africa

Concerns have emerged regarding the availability of striker Victor Osimhen for the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations semi-final showdown against South Africa.

In an official statement released by the team on Monday, it was revealed that the Napoli striker is grappling with abdominal discomfort, preventing his travel with the squad to Bouaké for Wednesday’s crucial match.

While the 25-year-old has the potential to rejoin the team on Tuesday pending clearance from the medical staff, his current condition necessitated a precautionary measure.

The statement outlined the team’s travel arrangements from Abidjan to Bouaké via an Air Cote D’Ivoire flight, with Osimhen remaining under close observation in Abidjan alongside a member of the medical team. His participation in the semi-final hinges on receiving medical clearance by the following morning, allowing him to reunite with the squad before 5 pm.

Despite registering only one goal in the tournament thus far, Osimhen has been a standout performer for the Eagles. His dynamic partnership upfront with Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon has significantly contributed to the team’s advancement to their 16th AFCON semi-final.

Nigeria is poised to take on South Africa at the Stade De La Paix in Bouaké at 6 pm, with hopes resting on the availability of Osimhen, a key asset in their pursuit of continental glory.
