Four communities in Benue State have signed a peace accord to resolve decade-long conflicts over natural resources. The agreement, facilitated by International Alert in collaboration with the Benue State Peace Commission, includes the Ologba and Egba communities in Agatu LGA and the Tivs and Jukuns in Fiidi, Makurdi LGA.
The conflict, primarily over land, water, and fish ponds, was worsened by ethnic tensions and climate change. Paul Nyulaku-Bemshima, International Alert’s country director, praised the communities for their dedication to dialogue and cooperation, which led to the creation of local peace and adaptation plans.
Sunday Jimoh, International Alert’s project manager, highlighted empowerment initiatives like briquette-making factories and fish kiln machines aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods and peace.
Joseph Har, special adviser on security to the governor, commended the initiative, stressing the importance of safeguarding the resources provided.
Benue State Peace Commission’s Director-General, Josephine Habba, described the agreement as a significant step towards enduring peace and development. Community leaders also expressed gratitude, noting that the conflict resolution efforts have restored freedom of interaction between previously divided communities.
