Agatu: Herdsmen kill two in renewed attack

Two Nigerian soldiers have been shot dead by militias amid the lingering feud between the Agatu of Benue State and Fulani herdsmen in Bagana, Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The soldiers were among troops drafted to Bagana last year when clash between the Agatu and the herdsmen erupted.
An eyewitness said trouble started when soldiers drafted to the town to restore peace reprimanded some Agatu men who came to Bagana market and, following a drinking spree, were disturbing the public.

He said the action of the soldiers infuriated the Agatu who immediately invited their armed colleagues. They also accused the soldiers of taking side with the Fulani.

Consequently, the armed men laid an ambush at a Primary school where the soldiers were stationed and opened fire, killing the two, and injuring others.
He said the incident came barely three weeks after some Agatu militias stormed a Fulani settlement at Ojuwo Ugwechi, near Bagana, and killed over 400 cows.
Commissioner of police, Mr. Samuel Ogunjemilusi, confirmed the attack but could not give details of the casualties.
