Agatu youth leader, Aboje Otone was killed during fight over looted cows – Police
By Ameh Godwin
The Benue State police command has confirmed the killing of Aboje Otene, otherwise known as Philosopher, the youth leader of Agatu community area of the state.
A source claimed that problem started during the weekend when Otene led some youths to Ogbai community after some Fulani herdsmen had reported to him about their cows being slaughtered in the community by the youths.
On reaching Ogbai, Otene got more than he bargained for as people of the community pounced on him for daring to question them.
“He came back home with the promise to go back to Ogbai the following morning for the resolution of the problem.
“However, when he got there with just few of his men, the people of Ogbai had already organized a group and immediately they saw him and his men, they started firing at them and he was killed in the process,” a source had told DAILY POST.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Benue State Police PRO, Moses Yamu said there were two accounts on what led to the incident.
“The first account said he was killed by his people while they were sharing the cows looted from Fulani herdsmen.
“Another account said he was shot by Ogbai people after he had gone there to make arrest,” he said.
Asked what was their own finding, the police spokesman said, “On the second account, we don’t know why he went to the community to make arrest, as what? A police man or soldier because we have soldiers stationed in Agatu and if at all there is any problem, he should have reported to them.
“So, I don’t really believe that account. I think the first account is more like it, though we are still making our findings to arrest those behind the attack.”
It could be recalled that Aboje Otene was one of those that signed the APC sponsored controversial agreement between the Fulani killing herdsmen and few selected AGATU political leaders which ceded the famous Adapati island known for its serene environment, fertile soil and rich in fish and other aquatic lives to the herdsmen but was swiftly rejected by the entire AGATU communities.
