Ahmadu Bello foundation requests Benue to host North Central quiz competition

Management of Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation has requested the Benue State Government to host its proposed annual inter-northern states mathematics and science quiz competition for senior secondary schools for states in the North Central Region.

Director programmes and research of the foundation, Hajiya Amina Abdulrahman while briefing journalists after a meeting with the Governor today at the Benue Peoples House Makurdi said the quiz competition is aimed at encouraging students of Northern Nigeria to develop interest in the study of mathematics, pure and applied sciences as well as technology.

She noted that Benue is requested to host the competition for states in the North Central Region comprising six states of Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger, Kogi, Kwara and the FCT, featuring 14 schools with a total of 28 students.

According to her, the competition which also involves states of the North East and North West to be hosted in Adamawa and Sokoto States respectively would climax in Kaduna where students from each region would compete for first, second and third positions.

Hajiya Abdulrahman stated further that first, second and third winners of the competition would be sponsored by the foundation to PhD, Masters and First Degree levels respectively, stressing that the exercise also aims at promoting education and uniting the country.

She noted that the foundation which is one of the legacies of the late Sir Ahmadu Bello sponsors a total of 100 students yearly for degree programmes with each student benefiting N100,000 yearly for the four year programme, pointing out that the foundation would continue to collaborate with Non-Governmental Organisations poised to helping brilliant students to acquire education.

The programmes and research director expressed delight over the warm reception accorded the team by Governor Ortom at a very short notice, adding that the Governor had promised to positively look into the proposal.
