The mortal remains of the late former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, have arrived in the state in preparation for his funeral ceremonies and interment.
Akeredolu, who succumbed to prostate cancer in Germany in December 2023, is being honored with a series of funeral rites, commencing with the Ajabue traditional rite held in his hometown of Owo. This town serves as the headquarters of the Owo Local Government Area of the state and hosted the traditional rite on Wednesday.
A Special Court Session in his honor is scheduled to take place at Court 1 of the Ondo State High Court on the same day. Additionally, a Lying in State and Commendation Service will be conducted at the Akure Township Stadium at 1:00 pm, followed by an Evening of Tributes at Saint Andrews Church in Owo.
The funeral program outlines further events, including a Service of Songs on Thursday, February 22, at St. Andrews Cathedral, Imola Street, Owo, by 4:00 pm. The Wake-Keep at Maranatha Villa, Owo, is set for 8:00 pm, accompanied by a Candlelight Procession and World Gyration by the Kegites Club from 8:00 pm until dawn.
On Friday, February 23 (a public holiday), a Funeral Service will be held at St. Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo, at 10 a.m., with interment immediately following at the burial site in Owo, restricted to immediate family members. A reception will then be held at Mydas Hotel and Resort, Ikare Road, Owo, at 1:00 pm.
Continuing the commemoration, on Saturday, February 24, 2024, there will be an Akeredolu Memorial Friendly Football Match at Akure Township Stadium at 3:00 pm. The Thanksgiving Service is scheduled for Sunday, February 25, 2024, at St. Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo, beginning at 10:00 am.
