Senate President Godswill Akpabio has confirmed both legislative and political backing for the creation of Anioma State, describing the initiative as historically justified and vital for equitable development.

Akpabio made the announcement on Wednesday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Zonal Conference held in Asaba, Delta State, reiterating that the President Bola Tinubu administration remains committed to the effort.

The Senate President said that if established, Warri will serve as the capital of the new Delta State, noting that the city already boasts key infrastructure, including an airport, government offices, major oil companies, a seaport, and a stadium.

Attendees at the conference included governors from Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River states, as well as other political leaders and party stakeholders from across the South-South region.

Akpabio highlighted that the proposal, championed by Senator Ned Nwoko representing Delta North, has received consistent legislative attention and ranks among the priorities of the 10th Senate. He described the creation of Anioma State as a move that would promote administrative efficiency, decentralization, and socio-economic development for the region.

“The creation of Anioma State will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities,” Akpabio said. “With Asaba as Anioma State’s capital, Warri will serve as the capital of the new Delta.”

He further called for unity among the people of the South-South, urging stakeholders to support the restructuring plan for the benefit of the region.
