Alia reacts as protesters storm Govt House in Benue
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, addressed the concerns of residents and Nigerians regarding the prevailing economic challenges during a protest organized by the labour unions at the Government House in Makurdi on Tuesday.
IDOMA VOICE reports that protesters, wielding various placards highlighting their grievances over the harsh economic realities, converged at the Government House seeking the governor’s attention.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Paul Biam, Governor Alia assured the protesters that their concerns would be communicated to President Bola Tinubu.
The governor emphasized that the government was acutely aware of the difficulties faced by workers and Nigerians at large. He acknowledged the stark reality of tough times and expressed commitment to implementing policies to alleviate these challenges.
“As a government, we fully acknowledge that workers and Nigerians, in general, are going through tough times. We must confront these realities head-on. Only by accepting and devising policies to mitigate these challenges can we improve our standard of living,” Governor Alia stated.
Earlier in the protest, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Terungwa Igbe, highlighted the untold hardships faced by Nigerians due to economic policies initiated by the Federal Government.
Igbe lamented the steep rise in the prices of goods, noting that within a single day and in the same market, prices fluctuated drastically. This situation, he stressed, has had a severe impact on workers.
The NLC Chairman urged President Bola Tinubu to swiftly initiate and implement policies aimed at alleviating the sufferings of the masses, calling for urgent action to address the challenging economic conditions faced by Nigerians.
