Alia speaks on fuel subsidy palliatives, appeals to Benue people to be patient

Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the Executive Governor of Benue State, has appealed to the people of Benue to exercise patience regarding the distribution of fuel subsidy palliatives to Nigerians. He made this plea during his speech at the 2023 National Convention/Mega Reunion of St. James Minor Seminary Old Boys’ Association (SAJSOBA) held at the school premises along Yandev-Makurdi road on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.

The Governor acknowledged that the purpose of the oil subsidy was to provide relief to Nigerians, but unfortunately, certain individuals in influential positions took advantage of the system, leaving the common man to bear the brunt of the situation.

He further explained that the nation found itself in a challenging situation, resorting to borrowing money to subsidize oil for the benefit of the common man. To address the complexities surrounding the subsidy issue, committees have been formed, engaging in discussions at various levels. However, Governor Alia emphasized that the federal government would eventually release a policy statement outlining how the palliatives would be effectively implemented.

Governor Alia urged the people to communicate with their constituencies, emphasizing that the process is far more intricate and comprehensive than what is merely reported in newspapers. He stressed the importance of making accurate calculations to avoid potential missteps in the system.

In light of the circumstances, Governor Hyacinth Alia appealed for patience, recognizing that a well-calibrated approach is necessary to ensure the equitable distribution of the fuel subsidy palliatives to those who truly need it.
