In a Wednesday session presided over by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, the Senate administered the oath of office to Amos Yohanna, officially appointing him as the new Senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District. This follows the recent ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which nullified the election of Elisha Abbo, the former lawmaker representing the district.
It’s noteworthy that Elisha Abbo was a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), whereas Amos Yohanna belongs to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Court of Appeal, in its judgment delivered on October 16, invalidated Abbo’s victory in the February 25 election and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a Certificate of Return to Amos Yohanna, affirming him as the duly elected representative for the area in the National Assembly.
Following the Appeal Court’s decision in Abuja, Elisha Abbo accused the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, of orchestrating his removal. He also alleged that four other senators, who had opposed Akpabio’s bid for the Senate presidency in June, would also face the same fate through court judgments.
Although Akpabio denied these allegations, Abbo later recanted and apologized to the Senate President, quoting Akpabio as saying, “I swear by my mother’s grave that I’m not involved; I don’t even know that you’re in court.”
