Anambra govt busts ‘baby-making factory’, rescue pregnant teenagers

On Wednesday, February 7, in a joint effort with law enforcement, the Anambra state government rescued six pregnant teenagers from what was described as a ‘baby-making factory’ in Umunya, Oyi local government area. Commissioner for Health, Afam Obidike, informed reporters that the factory came to light during a routine inspection by the state’s health facility accreditation and monitoring unit.

The facility, named ‘Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity,’ situated at No 1, School Road, Tansian University in Umunya, was found engaged in the sale of babies. Upon arrival, nurses at the site fled, prompting the intervention of security forces including the OCHA-Brigade, Civil Defence Corps, and Police to gain access.

Inside, the discovery was alarming – six underage pregnant girls, aged between 14 and 21, allegedly held against their will. They revealed being housed by a self-proclaimed doctor identified as Mr. Odili Ossai from Delta State, currently evading authorities. The girls reported that upon delivery, Mr. Ossai, the owner, would sell the babies.

Five individuals linked to the ‘factory’ have been apprehended, with ongoing police investigations. Commissioner Obidike reiterated Governor Charles Soludo’s commitment to eradicating fraudulent medical establishments in the state. He highlighted the establishment of the state Illegal and Anti-Quackery Taskforce Team aimed at eliminating unethical practices and improving healthcare quality.

Residents were urged to report any healthcare-related malpractices, and Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, the director of medical services, warned fake practitioners to cease operations immediately or face legal consequences.
