Anambra: Woman exchange three-month-old grandson for N50,000

Oluchukwu Nwosu, a grandmother hailing from Nkwelle in the Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, is currently in police custody on suspicion of selling her three-month-old grandson for N50,000.

PUNCH Metro reports reveal that the child was born out of wedlock to the suspect’s daughter, identified as Ijeoma.

The suspect and accomplices involved in the transaction were apprehended by security officials from the state Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the state police command, following a report made by the baby’s mother to the ministry.

Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Sunday.

The statement read, “The Ministry of Women and Social Welfare in Anambra State has rescued a three-month-old baby who had been sold by the grandmother. The rescue occurred in response to a report by Ijeoma Nwosu, who claimed that Oluchukwu Nwosu, her mother, forcefully sold her baby soon after he was born and has since refused to tell her where he is.”

Upon receiving the allegation, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, initiated action to identify and apprehend the culprits in collaboration with law enforcement. After nearly a month of consistent intelligence and surveillance, the offenders were apprehended.

The statement quoted Ijeoma as revealing that her mother sold the three-month-old baby for N50,000, citing financial constraints, caregiving challenges, and low income as reasons.

“During interrogations, the culprit confessed how she came across a buyer who, after days of negotiations, finally paid her the agreed sum. But the baby’s buyer, identified as Madam Evelyn, a native of Uruagu Nnewi, stated that she paid N200,000 to the person who arranged the transaction,” the statement added.

All the suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
